Class 4 (Year 3/P4/3rd Grade)
Report for School year ending July 1976

Attendance Good Conduct Poor Industry Fair
English Grade C+ Stephen's work in this subject has improved steadily. His spelling and reading are much better.
Maths Grade B- Stephen's maths are good, but is is a very slow worker.
Social Studies (History, Geography, etc.) Grade B He finds these subjects interesting and retains the knowledge well.
General Remarks Stephen has improved both his behaviour and his work this year, although there is still some way to go. He is still inclined to waste time talking and he must work faster.

My comments: I can't remember Miss Cartledge... so obviously not the most memorable of years for me!
Class 5 (Year 4/P5/4th Grade)
Report for School year ending July 1977

Attendance V. Good Conduct Good Industry Fair
English Grade C+ Stephen is a very keen reader and would gladly spend all day with a book. He can do good written work but seldom wants to.
Maths Grade B+ It is most frustrating to see a boy so clearly able to do good work be so consistently lazy and untidy in his day to day performance.
Social Studies (History, Geography, etc.) Grade B Stephen's constant reading gives him a good store of knowledge as background for social studies. He will talk and discuss all day long. But don't ask him to work!
General Remarks Stephen is an honest, polite and most likeable boy. However, I really don't know what is required to make him work! His examination grades show clearly how capable he is. Yet, if only he would work from day to day, he would succeed enormously. Perhaps it will happen in a flash! He is more than able to cope with all his work.
B.J. Proctor Class Teacher
[From Mr Swainson] Having shown that he is able, Stephen will now be made to give more effort.

My comments: Mr Proctor was one of my all-time favourite teachers. He showed respect to children and adults, he had a good sense of humour, and he liked discussing ethics (like "is it ever right to lie, for example to protect someone?"!)
Class 6 (Year 5/P6/5th Grade)

Conduct Fair Industry Satisfactory
English Stephen is capable of very good work, but due to carelessness and untidiness, much of his work is often unreadable.
Maths Stephen has a good understanding of number work. Oral work is often excellent, but written work, again, suffers from carelessness and untidiness.
Social Studies (History, Geography, etc.) Shows a lively interest in oral work, but this interest is not sustained in his written work.
General Remarks Stephen's progress should have been greater. His immature behaviour is preventing him from reaching his potential. Greater effort will be required in the future if a satisfactory standard is to be maintained.

My comments: Mrs Clow is another teacher that I have very little memory of! I do remember doing a Science topic with my friend Manjit Manku, and the twins (whose names I forget, although I think one was Gail) "stole" our work!

General Remarks Stephens work is good, but he is so untidy. He must try to improve his writing and setting out of his work.
Margaret Barker Class Teacher

My comments: Mrs Barker is another of my all-time favourite teachers. Like Mr Proctor, she showed respect, she could have a wicked sense of humour. But boy, was she scary! I remember when I was in Mr Proctor's class, I was sent out for talking (Mr Swainson must have been unavailable, as I wasn't sent to him to get the slipper) and I was sent to Mrs Barker's class. I was standing there, not feeling very well, but I dare not say anything to Mrs Barker... until one of her class put up his hand and said to Mrs Barker, "I think Stephen is going to be sick because he's so white, Miss!" Needless to say, she sent me out to the bathroom to be sick! In 1990, I worked on a voluntary basis at Bishop Creighton, befor moving back to London and training to be a teacher. On the day on which I received my graduation photographs from University, I took them into the school to show the staff... and a retired Margaret Barker (it was so strange calling her Margaret!) was in for a day doing supply work! Needless to say, I was just a wee bit proud to show my old Class 7 (Year 6) teacher that I had graduated from University!
Other comments: It is interesting to note that I don't really recall two of the teachers that I had at Bishop Creighton.

Some memories of my time at Bishop Creighton... in no particular order!:

Those were the days, my friend by Mary Hopkins - the 7th best-selling single of 1968, the year I was born!
